Recording update, again.

So recording has been in stasis due to outside obligations between all of us and Mark, our engineer. Here’s what’s done:

  • bass
  • drums
  • Todd’s guitars
  • Brendan’s main guitars

Shit to still do:

  • Brendan’s guitar overdubs
  • synths/samples/organs
  • vocals
  • stitching the whole fucking thing back together

Brendan’s cousin Beau (of Saosin fame) is set to mix when we’re finished. Note that that link goes to a fucking Wikipedia page about him. Holy shit!

While I’m not sure about the vinyl timeframe, the CD version is still reasonably on track to come out this fall. I can speak for all of us when I say that we’re super stoked with how it’s turning out. It’s definitely the best record we’ve done, and I’m super pumped to get it finished and out.

Further bulletins as events warrant.

Bass and drums? They’re done. I’ll post some pictures I took later, as well as a shitty video I shot on my phone.

Next stop: editing! Then onwards to guitars!

RECORDING

So the band is finally winding down; right now I feel like a buffalo being driven towards a cliff. We practiced last night for the first time in a month in preparation for starting to record this weekend. New record should clock in at about 35 minutes or so. Tentatively titled THINGS HAVE LEARNT TO WALK THAT OUGHT TO CRAWL. Right now the plan is that we’ll be doing a limited run of CDs ourselves, and Mylene Sheath will be handling vinyl and digital, which is a bit different (and better!) than our initial plan.

More to follow. Stay tuned!

Signing Off…

After eight years as a band, Angel Eyes is breaking up. There were a number of reasons behind our decision; some big, some small, but all have been adding up over the last year or so.

In a lot of ways, the band has run its course. Not necessarily in terms of the music we create together, but just personally. We’re all in radically different places than we were when we started out. As we grow older, our responsibilities change, our priorities shift. And while the band means different things to each of us, I think I speak for everyone when I say that what we take away from it has also changed, also shifted. We’ve always said that we’d break up before we felt like we were going through the motions, and we’re remaining true to our word. At this point, I think that Angel Eyes has probably said everything we wanted it to and we feel comfortable dissolving it on our own terms.

When I think about all that’s happened to us since the band started, it blows my mind. I was 23 and fresh out of college; I’ll turn 32 in less than a month. There have been marriages and divorce, birth and death. People have bought homes and lost them. Careers have changed, jobs have been lost. Other bands we were involved with have come and gone. And somewhere in there the bottom completely fell out of the economy.

But through all of these massive events, there have been two constants: 1. Todd is still a student, and 2. we’ve always had the music and each other. No matter what life has thrown at us as individuals, we’ve always had each other’s back; and for a few hours a week we could come together and channel all of those experiences, that joy and anger and frustration and grief, into something bigger than any of us. For this, I am eternally indebted to the other members of Angel Eyes, and I proudly consider them to be my brothers in spirit, if not blood.

So where does that leave us right now? Well, for starters, we’ve canceled all of our upcoming shows. That sucks and our sincerest apologies go to the other bands, the promoters and the venues for their inconvenience. Beyond that, we’ll still technically be a band for at least a little while longer: we’re finishing writing for a final record that we’ll be recording this summer. All of us are pretty stoked on these songs, and it feels like a good note for us to bow out on. At the moment it’s looking like we’ll be releasing it as a free download alongside a limited physical version with (hopefully) cool packaging, but that’s still subject to change. When the record is ready we’ll be coming out of slumber for one final show and then this particular leg of our journey will be at an end.

…and that’s that for now. If we don’t see or hear from you again in the context of this band, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for listening and your support. For everyone else, we hope to see you one last time in a few months.

Take care.

Yo. We have a show coming up at Reggie’s Rock Club on June 10th with ADAI, who are awesome. LAZ and Wagon Load of Bones are also playing. Show starts at 8, we’re on second, and there are apparently vodka specials that night, if you’re into that sort of thing. We hope to see you there!

Also- the new LP, “Midwestern,” is out July 13th on Mylene Sheath records. We’ll get some more info up here (i.e. pre-orders, anything like that) as soon as we have it.

Upcoming Shows

So we have a show on April 17 at the Mutiny in Chicago with Chicago Thrash Ensemble, Baseline:Mars, and one more (I think).

We also have one April 25 at the Darkroom in Chicago with Czar, Why Intercept, and Adai.

Edit: Due to jobs getting in the way, we had to drop off the show on the 25th. It’s still going on without us, however, so you should go check it out. I should add it’s at the Rockbox and not the Darkroom now.

We’ve got nothing lined up for May, but will be back to rock with shows in June and July.

Last night we finished mixing the new record. It was recorded and mixed by Greg Norman at Electrical Audio with some overdubs done at his home studio, Studio Greg Studios II. Artwork stuff is in process, and right now we need to set a date to have the whole thing mastered. More updates when we have them.
